How to use the soccer timer
- Pick the half length and half-time. A full match is two 45-minute halves with a 15-minute break; for youth or league games, follow your competition rules.
- Press Start at kick-off. The shrinking disk shows how much time is left at a glance.
- When the first half ends, the whistle blows and half-time starts by itself. When half-time is over, press Start again at the second-half kick-off.
How long is a soccer match?
Under the IFAB Laws of the Game, a match is two equal halves of 45 minutes. Halves can be shortened only if the referee and both teams agree before kick-off and the competition rules allow it, so youth leagues set shorter halves for each age group, and some adult leagues play quarters.
| Format | Playing time | Break |
|---|---|---|
| Full match | Two 45-minute halves | Half-time of up to 15 minutes |
| Extra time | Two halves of up to 15 minutes (competition rules) | Drinks break of up to 1 minute between them |
| Futsal | Two 20-minute halves; the clock stops at every whistle | Half-time of up to 15 minutes |
| Youth and leagues | Set by competition rules | Set by competition rules |
How to add stoppage time
Referees add time to each half for play lost to substitutions, injured players, time-wasting, cautions and send-offs, drinks breaks, VAR checks and goal celebrations. The number the fourth official shows near the end of a half is the minimum: the referee can add more, but never less.
In Wontimer, each press of +1 min while a half is running or paused adds a minute, and the disk grows to match. The added time shows next to the half, like +2 min, and Reset takes you back to the original length.
Reading the disk
On the 60-minute scale, a 45-minute half starts as a disk running from 12 to 9 o’clock. When its edge reaches 6 o’clock, 30 minutes are left; at 3 o’clock, 15 minutes. One glance from the touchline tells you where the half stands, so your eyes can stay on the game.
During half-time the disk turns teal, and the label under it shows 1st half, Half-time or 2nd half with dots, so players and parents can tell at once whether the game is on or on a break.
Tips for the touchline and the gym
Prop a tablet or laptop on the bench and turn on Focus mode: just the disk and the time, full screen. In a gym or PE class, put it on a TV or projector so the whole team can see the clock.
In supported browsers the screen stays on while the timer runs. If you lock your phone with the power button, the browser pauses and the whistle may sound late or not at all, so keep the screen on. iPhones in silent mode won’t play the whistle, and a Bluetooth speaker helps on a big field.
Soccer timer FAQ
Can I stop the clock when the ball goes out?
Yes. Press Pause or tap the center of the disk to stop, and Resume to carry on. The Space bar works too. Official soccer keeps the clock running and makes up lost time with stoppage time, but stopping the clock is handy when you only want to count time in play.
Does it work for quarters?
Yes. Turn on Play four quarters to split the match into Q1 to Q4 with a break between each. You can set any quarter and break length.
Can I skip half-time?
Set half-time to 0 minutes. When the first half ends, the timer goes straight to the second half and waits for you to press Start at kick-off.
Will the whistle sound if my phone screen turns off?
If the screen turns off, the browser can pause and the whistle may be late or silent. Supported browsers keep the screen on while the timer runs, so don’t lock it with the power button.
Does match time count toward my focus history?
No. Soccer and futsal match time is not added to your focus history. Anything you tracked with the timer or Pomodoro stays as it is.
